"Intellectual property" is a term referring to a number of distinct types of creations of the mind for which property rights are recognised.

Intellectual property law is concerned with various forms of protection for eligible intellectual property.

What Qualifies as Intellectual Property?

Under intellectual property law, owners are granted certain exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets.  Patents deal with inventions and improvements to existing inventions.  Trademarks are brand names/designs that are applied to products or services and exclude others from their use.  Copyright protection covers literary, artistic, and musical works and prevents them from being used by others.
